Madrid...Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Great way to Spend a Weekend
Our trip started off with a great surprise. One of the first kids I met through my job was on our plane to Newark. Megan is spending a month in Europe for school. I didn't see her until she got on the plane. Todd kept saying he hoped we didn't get anyone next to us that smelled...Well, we lucked out and got Megan. Not a bad way to start a trip.
Madrid is really cool. Not a place i would want to spend a ton of time but it is nice. We went all over the city and even took a day trip to Toledo. It was AWESOME!!! It is this beautiful town in the hills. For the first time felt like we were in another country. We got there around noon and walked around for a while and decided to stop to get some lunch. that wasn't the best idea...since when we were done it was siesta time (all stores close from 2pm till 4 or 5)!!! I don't think Todd was all that upset, it just meant I couldn’t shop. We have to do a better job of remembering Siesta Time.
I now understand why dinner is so late in Spain. The sun doesn’t set until 10pm or so. Saturday night Todd and I decided to go down to the Spanish Palace for dinner. We thought it would be great to find a little cafe. We took off from our hotel around 10pm and decided to get a cab (our legs were killing us from all of the walking). After a traffic jam, we decided to get out and walk. We had been to the Palace before and thought we could find it again. It wasn’t until we got out of the cab that we realized we did have a map with us. A map is very important in Madrid, but what the heck, we could find it. After walking for an hour, in and out of sketchy areas, we got in another cab. Finally, arriving to the Palace around 11:30pm and there was only one restaurant open. Good news, it was a great meal. But, after all of that I would have eaten another McDonald´s hamburger.
Lessons Learned:
1. Always have a map in a foreign country.
2. Madrid is truly the city that never sleeps. Todd and I walked through the streets at 2am and it looked like NYC at rush hour. The amazing thing is that people of all ages were out.
Next Stop Seville!!!
